Egypt to Provide Defensive Military Support to Saudi Arabia

by admin477351

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has clarified that any military support Egypt offers to Saudi Arabia will strictly focus on defensive measures, excluding offensive operations against Yemen. El-Sisi’s statement underscores Egypt’s commitment to protecting Saudi territory and the broader security of Arab nations, should they request assistance.

The announcement comes as Egypt evaluates a legislative proposal allowing the president to authorize defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia. The Egyptian parliament has postponed discussions on the measure until October 26. According to Egypt’s constitution, any deployment of armed forces abroad for combat missions requires the National Defense Council’s consultation and a two-thirds majority approval from the parliament.

El-Sisi emphasized the interconnection between Egypt’s national security and that of the Gulf states, particularly stressing the importance of noninterference in other countries’ internal affairs. He also highlighted the need to protect national institutions and oppose armed militias.

Concerns about regional security have intensified following increased Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia. These escalating tensions have raised alarms over maritime safety in critical areas like the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital channel for international shipping.

In a related development, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty mentioned that Cairo is working with countries around the Red Sea to bolster regional security through economic development, logistical collaboration, and enhanced partnerships.

Egypt’s stance reflects a strategic effort to support Saudi Arabia’s security while avoiding direct involvement in offensive military actions in Yemen, thereby maintaining a focus on regional stability and national security interests.
