In a significant effort to bolster food security in Yemen, Saudi Arabia’s aid agency, KSrelief, has joined forces with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to launch a $10 million project. This initiative, which targets vulnerable communities, aims to enhance long-term resilience in the region through a variety of support mechanisms.
The collaborative funding will see both KSrelief and the UK contributing $5 million each. The United Nations World Food Programme will manage the project’s implementation, focusing on the Yemeni governorates of Al-Mahrah, Hadramout, Aden, Al-Dhale, and Lahij. The initiative is designed to provide conditional cash transfers, which will facilitate better access to food and help restore vital productive infrastructure.
Part of the project’s strategy includes assisting families to move from reliance on emergency food assistance towards greater self-sufficiency. In addition to cash transfers, the initiative encompasses vocational training programs and support for local authorities. It also aims to improve governance and sustainably manage community assets, thereby fostering a more resilient local economy.
This agreement is a continuation of Saudi Arabia’s extensive humanitarian efforts through KSrelief. Since 2015, KSrelief has implemented over 4,400 aid projects globally, with a total value exceeding $8.5 billion, reaching 113 countries. The new partnership with the UK underlines a commitment to addressing immediate needs while laying the groundwork for sustainable development in Yemen.
