Saudi Arabia Halts Riyadh Flights Amid Houthi Missile Threats and Security Review

by admin477351

Saudi Arabia has suspended flights at Riyadh’s main international airport through Saturday following a series of missile attacks by Houthi forces, raising concerns over aviation safety and the effectiveness of the kingdom’s air defenses. The escalation in hostilities comes after deadly strikes on Saturday that reportedly resulted in 13 deaths and over 300 injuries.

Further missile launches were reported on Monday, targeting various Saudi cities and prompting authorities to reassess security measures. This situation has led to the cancellation of several flights as airlines respond to the heightened threat. Previous Houthi strikes have reportedly caused damage to aircraft and fuel facilities at Riyadh airport, underscoring the vulnerability of critical infrastructure.

In response to these repeated breaches of its air defense systems, Saudi Arabia is conducting an urgent review to bolster the protection of its extensive network of government buildings, airports, energy facilities, and infrastructure hubs. Despite the ongoing security crisis, Saudi officials are working to reassure international investors and energy markets of their resilience. Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser have both highlighted the potential global economic repercussions of threats to energy infrastructure in the region.

The Houthi group has issued further threats, warning of additional attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities and advising workers to avoid these sites. They have also cautioned against U.S. military involvement in Yemen, threatening retaliation if such actions occur.

Meanwhile, fighting continues in Yemen, particularly around Taiz, where Saudi airstrikes target Houthi positions. The conflict exacerbates humanitarian issues, with local authorities signaling shortages of essential medicines and increased strain on emergency medical services.

Efforts to broker peace remain uncertain, as Iran explores mediation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. However, proposed temporary ceasefires have yet to achieve consensus. The Houthis advocate for a comprehensive political settlement, warning that ongoing conflict could destabilize the region further and result in increased casualties.

The surge in violence poses a significant threat to Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to maintain regional stability and diversify its economy away from oil dependency. Continued attacks on key infrastructure could disrupt travel, shake investor confidence, and create uncertainty in global energy markets.
