Japan’s Emperor Naruhito officially opened the 20th Asian Games in a vibrant ceremony on Saturday in Nagoya, ushering in a major multi-sport event for the continent. The ceremony took place at a stadium with a capacity of 30,000, attended by notable figures such as Empress Masako and International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry.
Athletes from 45 countries and territories are set to compete in the Games, which feature over 40 sports and run until October 4. The event includes traditional competitions like athletics and swimming, as well as unique sports such as kabaddi and sepak takraw. Newcomers to the Games include eSports, breakdancing, BMX cycling, padel, and mixed martial arts.
The first gold medals are anticipated to be awarded on Sunday, as athletes vie for top honors. The Games also serve as a qualifying platform for the 2028 Olympics in seven sports, providing an additional layer of competition for those eyeing future Olympic participation.
The lead-up to the Games was marked by several organizational challenges, including severe flooding in Nagoya and logistical issues related to transportation and accommodation. Despite these hurdles, the event continues to be a focal point for leading sporting nations such as India, China, and Japan, with many young athletes poised to capture the spotlight.
