The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia have taken steps to enhance their military cooperation against Houthi forces in Yemen. The UAE has reportedly agreed to provide financial support to Yemeni government forces, while Saudi Arabia has committed to offering air support to the coalition. This decision comes as a response to escalating security threats posed by Houthi advances and attacks in the region.
The renewed alliance between the UAE and Saudi Arabia marks a significant development, given their past disagreements over Yemen’s political future and the involvement of southern separatist groups. The UAE had previously supported and trained various southern military units before reducing its engagement in Yemen earlier this year.
In parallel, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has initiated a counteroffensive to reclaim territory near Marib and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. Despite these efforts, progress remains slow due to ongoing fighting and persistent security challenges.
The conflict has exacerbated regional tensions, with Saudi Arabia experiencing drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis. In response, Egypt has signaled its readiness to consider defensive measures to support Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom is deliberating requests for additional military assistance.
The prolonged conflict continues to worsen the humanitarian situation in Yemen, where over 200,000 people have reportedly been displaced since August. This displacement adds further strain on humanitarian organizations working to provide emergency aid.
