The United States is set to implement tariffs of up to 100% on certain drones and components, citing national security concerns and the need to lessen reliance on foreign supply chains, mainly those dominated by China. This new policy focuses on unmanned aircraft systems, especially larger drones over 25 kilograms and those equipped with features related to national security, such as thermal cameras and docking stations, which will face the maximum tariff. Meanwhile, smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.
In addition to targeting Chinese products, the US will impose tariffs on drones and components from several key trading partners. Imports from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subject to a 15% tariff. Drones and components from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, provided that the hardware, software, and technology originate from these countries or the US itself. These tariffs are scheduled to take effect on September 3.
The White House has emphasized that these measures aim to bolster the US defense and industrial base by encouraging domestic drone production, thereby creating jobs and reducing dependency on foreign manufacturers. Currently, China holds a significant share of the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI being a major player in the US commercial drone sector. The company has previously faced US restrictions due to national security concerns.
US officials have expressed worries that foreign-manufactured drones may pose risks related to surveillance, sensitive data collection, and potential attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. This decision comes amidst ongoing trade and technology tensions between the US and China, with China recently imposing its own restrictions on drone exports to the US and taking action against several American companies.
